Who is suitable for MISS?

Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (MISS) in the form of Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression & Foraminoplasty (ELDF) and Laser Disc Decompression (LDD) have helped a very wide range of patients, including those with infirmities or disabilities, failed back or neck surgery or deemed too old for surgery and those undergoing chronic pain management or behavioural therapy. At the Spinal Foundation we have pioneered these techniques and successfully treated individuals from all walks of life from the average man and woman to active sportspeople and entertainers of all age groups. We see these techniques as a filter saving most patients from the need for conventional surgery.

Help for Almost Anyone

MISS is not appropriate however where a patient is pregnant or where there is very advanced axial (central bony) Stenosis or Cauda Equina Syndrome. For a list of conditions suitable for Spinal Foundation MISS click here

Significant Advantages

Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery offers considerable benefits when compared to the ‘overkill’ of open surgery and the complexities of spinal fusion. Complications are significantly reduced because no general anaesthetic is required and there is minimal blood loss and tissue disturbance. Risk of nerve damage is minimised, future options are preserved and in most cases treatment is on a ‘Day Case’ basis. A faster recovery and an earlier return to normal life can be expected.

Proven Success

Aware State Diagnosis and Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression & Foraminoplasty are delivering encouraging results in well over 80% of cases treated when reviewed 2-4 years later, and 70% are still satisfied 10 years later. In addition, these procedures are often carried out on a ‘Day Case’ basis, with far less consumption of anaesthetics, material resources and personnel; all of which indicates that these techniques offer a compelling alternative to traditional spinal surgery for Health Care providers and Employers.

Preserving your options

The Spinal Foundation aims to preserve the patients options for future treatment should their spine continue to degenerate so that advantage can be taken of evolving surgical techniques.
