Dear Spinal Foundation

Nearly 12 months since my last consultation after suffering a disc prolapse, I have made much progress recovery wise.  Although there seems to be some permanent nerve damage, I have been able to continue my life but with some significant difficulties.  I do, however, seem to have some all too familiar issues returning with it only being a matter of time before a similar episode to 12 months occurs.  For the time being,

I continue battling on as always and have managed to reduce my painkillers to only 1 every 24 hours (sadly addicted and going through withdrawal problems).  After the events of the past 15 years, been here before and treat it as a minor inconvenience to deal with.  Although I currently do not require a consultation, I will personally be amazed if I don’t suffer another disc prolapse sooner rather than later.  I know my one body and my back problems, the familiar signs leading up to a significant event happening are in motion.  Driving is big problem and I suspect will be my eventual downfall.

I am writing to get an update on the state of affairs in relation to the medical profession accepting that the surgery and treatment offered by the Spinal Foundation being the way forward.  It has disappointed me to read that NICE have not changed their recommendations regarding this surgery.  I am guessing this statement regarding ELF is also in relation to the ELD now offered?  If there is anything that I can personally do to help with improving the state of play then please do not hesitate to ask.  I live in Congleton, and quite frankly, would not have the life I have today for Mr Knight and your team.  I have contacted them explaining the total failings the NHS has offered me over the past 15 years, and that the work the Spinal Foundation do is the way forward.  I feel that my medical case history is a clear example of how the treatment I received from yourselves is the only reason why I am in such a good way (so to speak) to date.

Kind regards,
Richard Edge
